The construction of the Bijlmerbajes in the seventies generated an extensive public debate on the purposes of imprisonment. The construction of the Justitieel Complex Zaanstad, which replaced the Bijlmerbajes and the Koepelgevangenis in Haarlem, failed to arouse a similar level of interest. TAAK wonders why this is so and which themes could be introduced to reinvigorate the discussion on crime and punishment.
